2. Questions on the East Region Cup & Shield Q. What are the ER Cup and Shield? A. Founded in 2004 (ER Cup) and 2005 (ER Shield), the Cup and Shield are a single game knockout competition, open to all ERSL teams. The ER Cup is open to Premier and Regional teams from U10 to U18, and Division 1 teams above U14. The ER Shield is only open to Division 1 teams from U10 to U14. Teams may enter the Cup, or Shield, but not both. All teams enter competition in Round 1. The ERSL Executive will determines if byes are required in Round 1. Barring extraordinary circumstances, there will be no byes in subsequent rounds. Q. When and where are the finals? A. With the exception of the U17/18 Cup final, which is hosted by ERSL and played in August, all Cup finals will be played on the 3 rd Saturday in September. All Shield finals will played on the 3 rd Sunday in September. ERSL member clubs have been invited to host the 2006 Cup and Shield Finals. The ERSL Board will determine the Cup and Shield Final Hosts in July. Q. Is this the league championship? A. No. League champions in each division are decided solely on the basis of regular season play. The ER Cup and ER Shield are stand alone competitions in the traditional of league cups in many jurisdictions – a single game knockout, where David can beat Goliath.

3. Questions on the East Region Cup & Shield Q. Are there any rule differences between the Cup and Shield competition and regular league play? A. Yes. Please make sure you are familiar with the complete Rules and Regulations for the ER Cup and ER Shield Competitions that can be found on the ERSL web site – www.ersl.ca. Some points to remember:www.ersl.ca No player shall play for more then one team in Cup, or Shield in any one season. Players are Cup/Shield tied. Trial permits are not permitted. TPR’s are not permitted. Play ups permits are permitted provided the called up player is not Cup/Shield tied for the season. With the exception of the ER Cup and ER Shield finals, games which are tied at the end of regulation time shall be decided by Penalty Shots, in accordance with the Laws of the Game. Substitutions on the throw in are permitted in the ER Shield, but are prohibited in the ER Cup.

Please make sure you are familiar with the complete Rules and Regulations for the ER Cup and ER Shield Competitions that can be found on the ERSL web site – www.ersl.ca. Some points to remember:www.ersl.ca All games must be played on or before the completion date of each round except in exceptional circumstances as determined by the Director of Operations; and Both teams must notify the ERSL of the agreed date, venue and kick off of their cup games within 7 days of the completion date of the previous round. If an agreed date, venue or kick off can not be made then the Director of Operations will decide the outcome.

5. Questions on the East Region Cup & Shield Q. How do we schedule a cup or shield game? 1. Home team gets field from Club and determines best date option with Away team; 2. Once the game is agreed upon, the Home team then sends an email to the Away team with the details: game number, game date, home team, away team, field, start time; 3. The Away team forwards the email to the league at admin@ersl.ca (cc the Home team). The ERSL now has confirmation from both teams that the date is acceptable; 4. If this process is not followed the game will not be scheduled/rescheduled; and 5. The Home team is responsible for obtaining approval from their Club Scheduler.admin@ersl.ca Q. Are their any guidelines on when the game should be played? A. Yes. The cup draw schematic will include a deadline when each round must be completed. You are strongly urged to play games as quickly as possible. Q. Can we play the game during the week? A. Yes if you can get agreement and a field to play on, but we expect, and recommend, that most games will be played on a Friday, or weekend.

6. Questions on the East Region Cup & Shield Q. What happens if the home team can not get a home field? A. We suggest that you ask the away team if they can host the game. If neither team can host the game then please contact the ERSL office. Q. How can I find the contact information for our opponents? A. When you are logged into the ERSL web site, the coaches email and phone # can be found in the Contact section. Q. Who assigns the referees? A. The same process will be used as for a league game. Q. My team is not in the draw? A. The draw was made from those teams who entered the competition by the May 5th deadline. If you missed this deadline you were not in the draw. There will be no exceptions.

The East Region Cup & Shield Final Thought: The ER Cup and ER Shield are friendly competitions designed to enrich the competitive season, and develop closer ties between the various teams and clubs in EODSA and SOSA. These competitions have no impact on divisional standings. Realistically, winning, or losing, the ER Cup and Shield are unlikely to be a deciding factor in any players chances for that scholarship to an NCAA Division I powerhouse…. so let the players play, and enjoy the experience.
