Abolitionist Movement ► Abolitionist – someone who fought to end slavery. ► The movement emerged in the 1830s as a product of religious revivalism known as the Second Great Awakening. ► Abolitionists saw slavery as a personal sin and immoral. They lobbied to overturn the nation’s racially discriminatory practices.

The Quakers ► A religious group in New Jersey and Pennsylvania that led the northern antislavery movement. ► Quakers did not believe in violence and wanted slavery to end peacefully. ► Did not travel south.

Gabriel’s Conspiracy ► Led a slave revolt in 1800; he and 26 of his followers were executed. ► Race wars in Haiti influenced Gabriel. ► Some white southerners feared what happened in Haiti: Af-Am slaves ultimately overthrew all white masters.

Denmark Vesey ► A free black man who could read and understood what was occurring in Haiti ► Vesey planned a secret slave revolt in S. Carolina but a house servant revealed the conspiracy to his master ► 35 accused Af-Ams were hanged.

► Slave revolts and punishments brought more attention to stopping slavery. ► The grew to 10,000 members: men, women, black, white, all religions. ► The American Anti- Slavery Society grew to 10,000 members: men, women, black, white, all religions. Abolitionism Grows
