What is Film Distribution?
Film Distribution is the process a film company goes through every time they make a movie and make it available for an audience to watch, often in the cinema, DVD and downloadable copies.
3
The Process… Someone has a movie idea.
They outline the movie so they can get people like a studio interested in their idea who purchases the rights to produce the film. A screenwriter, produce, director, cast and the crew is found to be able to make the film. The film is sent to the studio once it has been made. The studio sets up a license agreement with the chosen distribution company. The distribution company decides how many copies of the film to print. The distribution company organises a movie screening to potential audiences.

The Process… The buyers of the movie decides on which movies they lease from the distribution company. The distribution company sends copies of the film to cinemas (usually American cinemas first) a couple of days before the opening day. The cinemas show the movie for an agreed number of weeks which can sometimes be longer if the movie is a hit. The distribution company receives the copies of the film back. If the movie is a hit then the distribution company will send copies other parts of the world (usually the UK) and state that it was a hit in America which sells the movie to the next audience.
