A LITTLE ABOUT ME I grew up in Rhinebeck. Undergraduate Education: – The University of Scranton- Secondary Education/Social Studies Graduate Education: – SUNY New Paltz- Secondary Education/American History I have been teaching for ten years, the past eight have been for the Archdiocese of New York.

Student Expectations Come to class and be on time. Complete class work on time. Do all your homework and bring it to school with you each day. Bring all necessary materials to class. Be an active learner and participate! Respect others.

GRADES Formative Assessments (45%) Classwork / Participation (20%) Homework (10%) Quizzes (25%) Reports Cards keep you informed of your child’s quarterly progress. Check Cornerstone regularly to stay informed about your child’s grades.

HONOR ROLL There are THREE levels of academic achievement for Middle School Students: Principal’s Honor Roll – Student must have NO grade lower than 90% – Overall GPA must be 95% or higher Scholar’s Honor Roll – Student must have NO grade lower than 85% – Overall GPA must be 90% or higher High Achiever’s Honor Roll – Student must have NO grade lower than 80% – Overall GPA must be 85% or higher

HONOR ROLL Con’t In order to qualify for Honor Roll, students MUST: – Maintain a “B” average or higher in ALL special area subjects – Be on time to school EVERYDAY – Maintain a “B” average or higher in Penmanship – Maintain a “B” average or higher in Classroom Conduct

iPADs iPads will be received the first week of school – They must remain covered at ALL times with the SMDP case. – Batteries must have a full charge each day Plug in every night in central location (kitchen, dining room, living room) – Any issue with the device must be reported to the main office at the beginning of the school day. – Students may NOT share user IDs OR passwords.

iPAD Etiquette Rules in my classroom: – The phrase “iPad Etiquette” means: iPads are closed, both hands are on top students desk, and ALL students are ready to listen. – iPads are for academic use only – The device must be treated with care: Do not use around food or drink Be gentle: do not bang on screen

“KNOWSY” Parenting Be a “KNOWSY” Parent – Know what your child is watching on TV! – Know what they are listening to on the radio, iPod, etc. – Know WHAT they are saying on the computer & cell phone. – Know WHO they are talking to on the computer & cell phone. – Know WHO their friends are.

Social Studies 8: The American Nation

In the eighth grade we explore late American history. Grade 8 Social Studies is arranged chronologically; we start the year with the beginning of the Civil War and period of Reconstruction. Then we move on to the development of the United States as a developing world power. We will then investigate the World Wars and their impact on the United States, and end exploring the US in the world after the wars, ending at the present while incorporating geography as well as economic, social and political trends.

Course Requirements Test/Projects/Papers After each major unit/sub unit students will be expected to pass a test, write a DBQ and/or complete a project to demonstrate their mastery of the content learned.

Course Requirements Test/Projects/Papers English Language Arts is part of every class curriculum. Students will be expected to read, write, analyze, and interpret many different genres. Throughout each unit, students will receive quizzes, complete writing assignments, read continuously, conduct research and complete projects to demonstrate their mastery of the subject.

Religion 8: History of the Church and Moral Decision Making

Religion 8 Eighth grade is a very exciting year in Religion! We begin looking at the history of the church and how it came to be. Students will investigate and test their moral abilities by an extensive examination of conscience. While continuing to strengthen their faith, the eighth graders will be preparing for the Sacrament of Confirmation with guidance from Father Dan.
