The Election of 1932 Presidential elections are held in November Inauguration was in March 20 th Amendment – Ratified in 1933 – Inauguration moved to January This meant that the nation had to wait 4 months for Roosevelt to take office

President Roosevelt 1.Bank Holiday – Temporary shutdown all banks 2.Only banks in good standing would reopen 3.Fireside chats – First radio address was about faith in the banks – Warm, friendly style – Communicating with the public

Works Progress Administration (WPA) Put people to work on a wide variety of construction projects. They built – 2,500 Hospitals – 5,000 Schools – 1,000 Airports – 13,000 Parks and Playgrounds

CCC Civilian Conservation Corps – unemployed single men ages 19-25. – They planted trees, built dams and bridges, developed parks and worked on conservation projects – The CCC paid for housing, clothes, and food – Over 2.5 million people will serve in the CCC.

TVA Tennessee Valley Authority – Transformed valley from a poor farm area to a rich productive area. – Built dams and Hydroelectric Power Plants that attracted industry and new jobs. – Planted millions of trees. – Educational, recreational and health services. – The TVA was one of the most successful programs of the New Deal.

AAA Agricultural Adjustment Administration – Supplemented farmers income – Soil conservation – Crop rotation – Not to plant land

Social Security 1.Created a national system of pensions for the elderly. 2.State run unemployment compensation. 3.support for the handicapped and dependent children.

Supreme Court In 1935 voted against the New Deal laws – gave too much power to the Federal Government 1937 Roosevelt asks the Congress for a bill to add up to 6 more justices – “Court packing”

The New Deal ends around 1938. Results 1.Increased the size of the Federal Government. 2.Government had acted as an employer 3.Gave security against old age and unemployment. 4.FDR preserved the Free Enterprise System. 5.Had a major effect on government, the economy, and American society.
