2. Introduction The Process The Task Evaluation Conclusion Credits The canoe is an important part of our Hawaiian history and culture. It was the sole means of transportation that brought our Polynesia ancestors to the Hawaiian Islands. Today, canoe paddling and outrigger canoe racing is a popular sport and hobby in Hawaii. The goal of the project is for students to learn about and appreciate how the canoe has been an integral part of the Hawaiian culture in the past, and how it continues to be so today. © Evelyn Zayas

Introduction The Process The Task Evaluation Conclusion Credits The Task Each student will conduct research to find out the types of canoes used by the early settlers, the resources they used to navigate the seas, about life on the voyaging canoes, and how canoes are used and enjoyed today in Hawaii. The student will create a website with this information, and add interesting multimedia about the journeys of the canoes. The student will also create a map that shows a route that the early settlers may have taken to reach Hawaii. © Evelyn Zayas

Introduction The Process The Task Evaluation Conclusion Credits Conclusion After completing this project, the student has hopefully learned how the early Polynesian people navigated to the Hawaiian Islands and what life was like aboard a voyaging canoe. The Hokule‘a is a modern replica of an ancient voyaging canoe that was navigated from Hawai'i to Tahiti and back without instrumentation in 1976, and provides us with great insight as to what the journey may have been like for the early settlers to Hawaii. If you have the opportunity, take a tour of this incredible vessel if it comes to a harbor near you! © Evelyn Zayas
