8 Where I Am From  Part One: Prewriting: The House that Built Me  Today you will need to spend time writing about the one place you have lived that most represents Where You Are From; this is the place you would name if someone asked you “where are you from?” If you have lived in a number of houses, choose the one that you remember the most. Spend some time writing about and remembering this place. Focus on this place in your journal writing—continuously write about this place for at least ten minutes.  Try to capture the sights, smells, sounds (Imagery!)—the overall feeling (mood!) of this home in your writing. Imagine you are writing this description for someone who has never seen this house/neighborhood.  What does this place mean to you now? What did it mean to you then? What memories do you have of this house? What people are associated with this place? What roles did they play in your life? Then? Now? What do you remember most about your surroundings? What do you remember least (things you wish you could remember)? What emotion did you feel most often there? Where did you play inside the house? Did you spend a lot of time alone? How did you pass the time? What did you think about? What were your hopes, fears, etc.? What was your favorite place inside/outside the house?  Minimum 15 sentences. Turn to your next clean right sided page. This should have an ODD page number.

9 The House That Built Me  I know they say you cant go home again. I just had to come back one last time. Ma'am I know you don't know me from Adam. But these handprints on the front steps are mine. And up those stairs, in that little back bedroom is where I did my homework and I learned to play guitar. And I bet you didn't know under that live oak my favorite dog is buried in the yard. I thought if I could touch this place or feel it this brokenness inside me might start healing. Out here its like I'm someone else, I thought that maybe I could find myself if I could just come in I swear I'll leave. Won't take nothing but a memory from the house that built me. Mama cut out pictures of houses for years. From 'Better Homes and Garden' magazines. Plans were drawn, concrete poured, and nail by nail and board by board Daddy gave life to mama's dream.  I thought if I could touch this place or feel it this brokenness inside me might start healing. Out here its like I'm someone else, I thought that maybe I could find myself. If I could just come in I swear I'll leave. Won't take nothing but a memory from the house that built me. You leave home, you move on and you do the best you can. I got lost in this whole world and forgot who I am. I thought if I could touch this place or feel it this brokenness inside me might start healing. Out here its like I'm someone else, I thought that maybe I could find myself. If I could walk around I swear I'll leave. Won't take nothing but a memory from the house that built me. -Miranda Lambert
