1 Analyzing Diamond Data Activity #14

2 Key Concepts  A pure substance such as a mineral, can be identified from observations and tests performed to determine its physical properties. These properties are based on the unique structure of the substance.  Minerals are crystals that form naturally on Earth. They have characteristic properties such as color, hardness, and a crystalline shape.  Conclusions can be made by comparing experimental data to known properties.

3 Vocabulary  Acrylic – word used to describe plastic. It is a man-made material that can be formed into many shapes and colors.  Diamond = the hardest material. Diamonds are composed entirely of carbon atoms. Usually has an octahedron shape and comes in many colors.  Fluorite – an inexpensive, abundant material found worldwide. Comes in a variety of colors.  Glass – a non-crystalline solid that can be man-made or occur in nature. Natural glass is formed when certain rocks melt under high temperatures.
