Adaptation vs. Modification
2
Warm-Up Adapt vs. Modify-What is the difference?
3
Define & Understand Adaptation-become adjusted to new conditions Ex-Wearing very heavy clothing in cold winters/wearing light clothing during very hot summers. Modification-make changes to something. To improve. Ex-Modifying a recipe to eliminate a food allergy. Adding a ramp to accommodate mom’s with strollers/person in a wheel chair.

What did early Texans do to adapt? When the people first moved into Texas they had to adapt to their environment. This meant changing their lifestyles or their behaviors to accommodate the harsh and unfriendly environment. Let’s look at ways the Texans had to adapt to the environment. Some tried to modify their environment to make it more comfortable and to make it feel more like what they were used to.
5
Modification Building of roadways-plowed & tore up land to build roads. Farming-land was plowed to plant crops Building of houses & buildings-land was torn up to build houses, buildings, sidewalks. Buffalo was killed off or herds moved farther west or north.
6
Food Texans were self-reliant-they had to depend upon themselves to provide for themselves (no stores or government assistance). Had to grown their own vegetables, raise their own meat, hunt their own game. Grew their own vegetables. Corn was a common crop that was grown everywhere.
7
Housing Depending on where people lived in Texas determined what materials were used in building homes. In East Texas homes were build from wood-log cabin homes in which the cracks were chinked (filled in) with clay. Elsewhere in Texas, homes were built using stone, adobe, or jacales-huts made from sticks.
8
Religion Catholic was the religion of Mexico and it was expected that all people living in Texas were practice the Catholic Religion. The Tejanos did well adapting to the practice of Catholicism.
9
Education Due to new colonies/towns building in the state, there were no schools or in some areas no money for schools. For wealthy families, some sent their children to other parts of the United States to attend schools. Areas with wealthy families that chose not to send their children to other parts of the U.S., they opened private schools. Poor families either educated their children at home or would open their home to other children and educate children in the area.
10
Clothing With the scarcity of materials, people living in Texas depended on what the environment could produce. Buckskin (deer hide) was a common choice for clothing but wasn’t comfortable and it did smell. Cotton was soon being grown all over Texas. Homespun-homemade clothing was soon being worn by all. For wealthy families, clothes were imported from eastern U.S. and other countries.
