Learning Outcome for The Evening You as parents will develop your understanding of Spelling, Grammar and Punctuation You will gain knowledge from FS-Year 6 Develop understanding of how we teach Spelling, Grammar and Punctuation to ensure progress Discover what you can do to support your child’s learning

Before I go any Further….. We are more than aware that parents as well as children have busy lives We are not asking you to spend every spare moment doing Spelling, Grammar and Punctuation activities with your child But we would like for us to work together to support your child’s learning

What do we actually mean by Spelling, Grammar and Punctuation? Spelling To name or write in order the letters constituting (a word).

Grammar Grammar-the study of the way words are used to make sentences-the body of rules imposed on a given language for speaking and writing it.

Punctuation The use of standard marks and signs in writing and printing to separate words into sentences, clauses and phrases in order to clarify meaning.

Spelling –where does it all begin Believe it or not at home….. Recognising sounds and letter names Learning to write and spell their name Sharing books and pointing out familiar sounds Reading to them Talking to them

From FS to Y6 Letters and Sounds Phonics /Graphemes /Phonemes Blends/CVC words Key words/Phases Spelling rules and patterns Root words Tricky words Using these spellings in everyday writing Teaching of spelling/spelling test

Grammar How many people have corrected their child when they are talking? ‘innit’ ‘bin the shop’ ‘bin town’ ‘frew’ ‘gonna’ ‘I seen it’ ‘can I go toilet’

FS to Year 6 It starts with learning how words can make a sentence Then using an adjective Conjunction Expanding a noun phrase Add an adverb Using the power of three Similie Varying length of sentence for meaning and effect And more…………..

Punctuation FS-Y2 Finger spaces Capital letter. ! ? Speech bubbles Commas to separate a list Apostrophes Direct speech and inverted commas

Punctuation Y3-Y6 All from FS-Y2 Colon Comma with adverbial phrase Inverted commas –direct speech Apostrophes to mark plural possession Brackets, dashes or commas to indicate parenthesis Semi-colon

Progression and Continuity What it looks like from FS-Year 6 How do we get it to develop from Foundation Stage through to Year 6? What are our expectations? What does the teaching look like that enables the children to make progress?

READING IS CRUCIAL Vocabulary Spellings Grammar Oracy Punctuation Discussion

Children will be writing sentences that make sense, are punctuated appropriately and all words are spelt correctly. These sentences make up longer pieces of writing –see examples IMPACT ON WRITING

What can you do??? Encourage your child to read and discuss the text with them Reading through their homework with them Correct spelling mistakes Focus on key words/spellings for year group/sent home Brush up on your own Spelling, Grammar and Punctuation Correct their spelling and discuss spelling patterns Read through their writing with them and help to correct grammar and punctuation BE SUPPORTIVE!

Evaluation On your way out please write on a post it anything that you have gained or are going to try from our reading information and put it on the evaluation board. This will help us to evaluate if our evening has been useful….
