Industrial Revolution
A change in how people work and how things were made. During this time things started to be made by machines instead of by hand. It made producing goods faster and cheaper . Terms to know: Nationalism has two definitions : is pride in ones country the desire to be one country Industrialization– when a country starts to build goods with machines instead of making things by hand, which increases the need for raw materials (cotton, iron or rubber ect) . It happens because of MINER A MINER gets Raw Materials from the Colonies to give to his Empire to sell at the Markets because he has Extreme Pride in his Nations. Imperialism—when one country takes over another area of land for trade and industry. Why did Imperialism Happen? The Industrial Revolution also led to the increased need for raw materials (iron, cotton, steal ect) The Industrial Revolution led to the increased production (making) of goods, and there was a need for new markets to sell the goods in. Nationalism the pride in one country lead to the belief that they should expand their great empire and having colonies would make their empire greater and stronger. Ms. Sara Hall

Imperialism—when one country takes over another area of land for trade and industry. Why did Imperialism Happen? Many European countries felt they had the right to take over underdeveloped lands and turn them into colonies. Social Darwinism – “survival of the fittest”. Social Darwinist felt that it was natural for stronger nations to take over the weaker ones. White Mans Burden- a poem that said it was the “white mans” duty to educate those in undeveloped nations Ms. Sara Hall

An imperialist nation is a nation that controls colonies. Britain, Belgium, Italy, Portugal, France, Spain, and Germany Ms. Sara Hall

How did Imperialism Occur in Africa?
In 1870 European countries started to compete colonies in Africa. This competition became known as the “Scramble for Africa”. European Countries just started to go to Africa and conquer (take over) the lands. King Leopold of Belgium was the 1st start this “Scramble”. This “Scramble” did cause some conflict among countries, so to avoid more conflict they held the Berlin Conference. Ms. Sara Hall

At the Berlin Conference the leaders setup rules for colonizing Africa and divided up Africa. When they divided up Africa, they gave little regard (care) to the people of Africa. They split of African tribes, families ect. Even till this day, this has caused problems. Ms. Sara Hall

Imperialism and its effect on Africa
Positive Negative Introduced the railroad system to Africa Introduced the Telegraph Introduced the Telephone Improved medicines, which helped keep the population healthy and alive longer. Africans were treated like 2nd class people When the European leaders split up Africa they broke cultural and ethnic ties. Ms. Sara Hall
