4 A Zaibatsu Economy A large financial and industrial corporation Mitsui Mitsubishi Sumitomo Yasuda Concentration of wealth caused problems Japan seized Taiwan, Korea, southern Manchuria- needed raw materials Military leaders became active and took all of Manchuria in 1931 Japan moved toward wartime status

5 The Nationalist-Communist Alliance Communism comes to Beijing Communist Party allies with the Nationalist party to remove imperialist powers in China Between 1923 and 1926 the 2 different groups worked together in the Northern Expedition Sun Yat-sen, Nationalist leader died in 1925 and Chiang Kai-shek took over Chiang disliked the communists and killed thousands in April 1927-Shanghai massacre

6 Communists hid in Jiangxi Province led by Mao Zedong Mao used guerrilla tactics to push back against Chiang The Long March Mao led his People’s Liberation Army on a march of 6,000 miles Mao started with 90,000 troops and left with 9,000 one year later

7 Chiang wanted China to be a republic The government would educate the citizens through a period of tutelage Land-reform program Modernize Industry A Class Divide Years of civil war/neglect weakened the political, economic and social fabric of China Wealth concentrated in the cities-Chiang supporters Farmers remained poor

8 Chiang wanted to keep Confucian values of hard work, obedience and integrity while integrating Western innovations Rejected excessive individualism and material greed Limited Progress Chiang: built roads, repaired RR lines, foreign powers gave up rights, national bank, improved educational system Chiang did not shift wealth from the rich minority to the poor majority Government censored free expression
