2 Assessment Objective AO2(iv) - Select material appropriate to your purpose and make cross- references Identify similarities and differences Select from across the whole texts Explain the reasons behind these, linked to audience and purpose

3 Examples of questions Describe the methods used by McVitie’s on the wrapper to sell Jaffa Cakes. To what extent do these methods avoid the criticisms made by Fay Weldon in Dull, dull, dull? Compare the ways in which words are used for effect in each item. Compare the front pages of Bella and Trout Fisherman magazines. You should write about: The pictures The print styles The layout.

4 Important points You could be asked to compare a range of different things e.g. facts / opinions, ideas, language, presentation, audience, purpose You should look for similarities and differences You need to use appropriate connectives to show that you are comparing

6 Framework for Reading 1. Read the question – what are you being asked to compare? 2. Read the texts 3. Work out the PAFT and message (if you haven’t already) 4. Highlight similarities and differences 5. Plan your response

7 Model question Compare how the two items use language to present their views of Academies (8 marks) 8 marks = 16 minutes Identify a range of similarities and differences Focus on the use of language and how these are linked to the purpose of each text

11 Advice You can either identify similar techniques and say how they are used for different effects OR you can identify different techniques and say that the writer’s have different views You need to focus on the question i.e. language Write in paragraphs and use connectives to show you’re making comparisons
