1 Microsoft Word February 3 Spelling and Grammar Checks, Outlines, and Inserting Hyperlinks

2 Spelling and Grammar Check “Spelling and grammar check will never replace our brains, but they can help us find many mistakes.” Quick review: –What color line indicates a spelling error or unrecognized word? –What color line indicates a grammatical error?

3 Managing Spell Check preferences Open a new Word Document Save it; use the conventions established. Name the file: –LAST FIRST SPELLCHECK Look to the right of the apple menu. Make sure Word is the program you have open.

4 Adjusting Spell Check On the menu bar, click on word and select preferences. Click on the round button next to “Spelling and grammar.” –Peruse the options that are checked. –Pay attention to your requirements. –In the grammar section, click on “Settings.” –Make sure they match your needs and your teachers’ requirements.

5 Test typing Type the “Human Brain” poem in your word document. (Type exactly as it was given) Look at the spelling. –Are all words spelled correctly? –What does that tell you about spell check? –Does typed work require proofreading by the author? Go to Word, preferences, then spelling and grammar check. You can adjust Word to catch some of these errors, not all.

6 Another note about spelling If you habitually misspell words, consider using Autocorrect options For example, I tend to misspell restaurant. –My error is to misplace the “u.” –From the menu bar in MS Word, select “Tools” and then autocorrect options. Type the word you misspell and replace with the correct spelling.

7 Outlines Teachers often request outlines Each teacher has preferences for the format of your work You can learn to customize outlines for each of your teachers. –This speeds up homework!

8 Begin by creating a new Word document Choose Bullets and Numbering from the Format menu. Click the Outline Numbered tab, then the format that looks like your preferred outline. –Click OK –You may modify the style, and indent. –You also have the opportunity to name your outline format for later recall.

9 Inserting Hyperlinks Open another word document, and give it an appropriate name. Open Fire Fox or Safari and locate an image of a football. –Drag the image to your desktop. Find a webpage for the team that won the super bowl (go to Google, type in 2009 Superbowl champion).Google –Paste the web page into your word document. Then type the words “Super Bowl Champs.” –Highlight the words, go to insert, then hyperlink and paste your web reference.

10 Shutting Down Quit out of all programs: Firefox, Safari, Word, and Power Point. Log out Shut down Replace your keyboard and push in your chair. Give Mrs. Snyder a post-it with topics you would like to cover in the next two weeks.
