Modern Chinese History: 1911 - 1949 Chinese Civil War: Jiang Jieshi AKA Chiang Ki Shek (a capitalist warlord) Vs. Mao Zedong (a communist peasant) The last Chinese Dynasty collapsed at the turn of the century in 1911. China tried to become a Democracy, but the people aren’t educated enoughto organize the whole country before the chaos of WWI happens in 1914. After WWI, in the 1920’s, China is ruled by Capitalist Warlords who use their private armies to control peasants and territory. Eventually Jiang Jieshi became the leader of these warlords. At the same time, Communists, led by Mao Zedong, challenged the capitalists and their Western allies. This led to Civil War.
16
The Long March As Mao marches through China he talks to average Chinese peasants everywhere to find out what they want. He is perceived as a man of the people. As Mao retreats from Jiang’s army he travels all across China, talking to the people and getting to know what they want. They in turn, get to know him. The Civil War goes on a break when the Japanese invade for WWII.

Chinese Political Thought- Pg 54A Today, we are going to look at three different philosophies about government in China. The first reading is from Chen Duxiu- an intellectual in China around the end of WWI. The second reading is from Jiang Jeishi, the Capitalist warlord who unites and rules China between WWI and WWII. The last reading is from Mao Zedong the great Communist Leader who transforms China after WWII. As you read these Quotes, think about what you know about China’s history as a country and answer the questions on a piece of paper.
