Compare Particle Models1 Review Previous Learning If you could see the particles that make up a drop of water, what would you see? The particles are always moving. They are close together, but with enough room to squeeze past each other and move from place to place.

Compare Particle Models2 Compare Particle Models Part 2 Contrasting Case Activity 2 FOSS Weather & Water, Investigation 2

Objective I can compare and contrast solid, liquid, and gas particles by completing a data table and a venn diagram Resulting in a better understanding that weather is the condition of the atmosphere at a given time and given place As measured by completed data table with at least 15 of 21 cells correct AND completed venn diagram with at least 4 of 7 sections correct

Compare Particle Models4 Examine Gas Particles The particles that make up a gas move very fast, so the attractions between particles have little effect. The particles are free to move away from each other, so gases contain a lot of empty space. As in liquids, the direction of movement is random. Each particle moves in a straight line until it hits something and changes direction. The difference is that gas particles move very fast and spread out in all directions. empty space

Compare Particle Models5 1.Stand far apart, with as much empty space as possible between particles. 2.Moving at a fast pace, walk directly forward until you bump into another particle or an object. 3.Stop and rotate so you’re facing a different direction. 4.Repeat steps 2 and 3. Try to maintain a fast but steady pace. Student Model – Gas Particles

Compare Particle Models6 Data Table – Gases SolidsLiquidsGases Is it made up of particles? Are the particles moving? If so, how fast do they move? Do they move from place to place or move in one place? If they move from place to place, is it random or does it follow a pattern? Do they attract each other? If so, what effect do the attractions have? pull them tightly together yes slowly move in one place -- yes pull them near each other yes faster move from place to place random yes little effect yes very fast move from place to place random yes

Compare Particle Models7 What Do They Have in Common? SolidLiquid Gas made up of particles particles attract each other particles are moving

Compare Particle Models8 Similarities Solid made up of particles the particles attract each other the particles are moving movement is random move from place to place LiquidGas

Compare Particle Models9 move from place to place attractions pull them near each other Solid Differences made up of particles the particles attract each other the particles are moving movement is random move slowly vibrate & wiggle in place attractions pull them tightly together move kind of fast slide past each other move very fast spread out in all directions attractions have little effect contain a lot of empty space LiquidGas
