Factoring Polynomials
2
Factors The numbers that are multiplied to produce a specific product.
2 and 3 are factors of 6, since 2 ● 3 = 6 The factors of 12 are 1,2,3,4,6, and 12. The number 12 can be expressed as the product of two factors as 1 ● 12 or 2 ● 6 or 3 ● 4.
3
Polynomial Factors Some algebraic expressions can also be expressed as a product of factors. 4x (2)(2x+5) 2y (2)(y+3) 3x can’t factor x2 + 2x (x)(x+2)
4
Greatest Common Factor
To find the greatest common factor of 12 and 18, express each number as the product of its prime factors. 12 = 2 ● 2 ● 3 18 = 2 ● 3 ● 3 I can check: 6 divides evenly into 12 and 6 divides evenly into 18!
