Incubators nurture firms, helping them to survive and grow during the start-up period when they are most vulnerable. Incubators provide hands-on management assistance, access to financing and orchestrated exposure to critical business or technical support services. They also offer entrepreneurial firms shared office services, access to equipment, flexible leases and expandable space – all under one roof. US National Business Incubation Association (NBIA) Definition

3 Incubators and support to enterprise creation 3 5-3 Business Incubation Definition Agreed at Global Summit Delhi October 2004 The (wider) business incubation environment is the wider context which should be conducive to the sustainable nurturing of growth potential and the development of enterprises. Business incubation is a public and/or private, entrepreneurial, economic and social development process designed to nurture business ideas and start-up companies and, through a comprehensive business support programme, help them establish and accelerate their growth and success. The business incubator is a physical space or facility that accommodates a business incubation process.

A business incubator: –Encourages entrepreneurship –Supports the development of new ventures –Fosters greater business diversification in the community A business incubator accomplishes these goals by providing: –Shared facilities –Comprehensive support services –Mentorship … to start-up and fledgling businesses
