5 From a Practitioner’s Perspective Roadmap to guide student learning through exploration of: Interest inventories, aptitudes, talents, skills assessments, work importance preferences Potential career path Preparation for future success Clear connections to education planning process Activities have been designed to ensure the district has met the OAR 581-022-1510 Guidance and Counseling requirements.

7 Let’s Get Specific Advisories Overview of the Advisory Concept 7 th Grade Advisory Activities Schedule: Meet with each individual advisories once a month from October through May (7 sessions)

8 Career-Related Learning Class CIS Jr includes: All content controlled for a 5th-grade reading level. An interest inventory that uses middle-school relevant experiences. Occupation information that includes context for how high school courses help prepare for an occupation, recommended high school activities, and types of postsecondary preparation. A six-year course planner for forecasting high school courses. A component to save activities and achievements (used for resume and scholarships). Components to begin documenting the education plan and education profile requirements for the high school diploma. School information with general admissions requirements to postsecondary training options. Developmentally appropriate curriculum activities. Personalized portfolios where students can house diploma requirement documentation, reflections, and saved information files. Portfolios can transfer to CIS high schools.

9 Bottom Line  It is not one more thing to add to an overcrowded plate for educators  It is THE THING – the umbrella under which all aspects of student education gather together  Focus on students’: preparation to meet Oregon’s diploma requirements including academic standards, applied learning, essential skills and education planning
