What is a Fairy Tale? Six things to look for in a Fairy Tale:
1. Tale starts with “Once upon a time” or “Far, far away” 2. Some kind of Magic 3. Usually royalty- king, princess, etc. 4. Castles or magic land 5. Things occur in 3s or 7s 6. Ends with “They lived happily ever after”

Why would Cinderella, Snow White and Sleeping Beauty be considered Fairy Tales
Common Beginnings Tale begins with “Once upon a time…” “A long, long time ago…” or Far, far away” Happy Ending Tale ends with characters resolving their problems, being rewarded and “living happily ever after” Characters Tale has at least one good character with actions to support those characteristics Magical Occurrence Magical occurrence will be an integral part of the plot with characters involved with magic

Differences between Types of Tales
Folk tales are oral tradition, about everyday life, underdog triumphs, many times animals play characters with human characteristics Fairy Tales are subgenre of folk tales, have royalty magic, begin with once upon a time and end with happily forever after Tall Tales are bases on true stories that have greatly exaggerated and handed down by word of mouth Fables usually have animals with human characteristics and teach a lesson or have a moral to the story
