DO NOW Rumors and gossip can be very powerful and can often change peoples’ point of view. Describe a time when you overheard something in the hallway and how the spreading of that rumor misinterpreted the story. What happened? How did that affect those involved? Journal 21

Review of Conflict Jesse struggles to put up points against the established star of his new basketball team Jesse struggles to keep up with his new teammates in the unfamiliar heat and humidity of Louisiana Jesse struggles against what he believes is his new coach’s prejudice against players that are new to the school Jesse is torn between his bitterness at being moved from his familiar life and his need to adjust to his new surroundings

External and Internal Please add this to your notes on CONFLICT. Conflicts are external when a character struggles against an outside force Conflicts are internal when the struggle is within a character. Which is which?

POINT OF VIEW The point of view is the vantage point, or way of thinking about something, of the story’s narrator. Each point of view has pros and cons Three Types of Point of View: 1 st Person 2 nd Person 3 rd Person Class Notes 27

1 st Person Point of View Main character tells the story using the pronoun ‘I’. Pro: gives the reader a sense of hearing from an eye witness directly Con: narrator can’t reveal everything, such as the thoughts of other characters

2 nd Person Point of View Narrator uses words like “You,” “Yours,” “Yourself” Narrator is often talking to themselves VERY RARE!

3 rd Person Point of View Narrator uses words like “He,” “She” and “They” Two Types: Third person omniscient Third person limited

3 rd Person Omniscient Narrator is God-like; can describe the thoughts and feelings of ALL characters Pro: narrator knows all Con: often makes the reader feel removed from the characters and action

3 rd Person Limited Narrator can see into only ONE character’s mind Pro: easy for reader to identify with main character Con: narrator may have trouble making minor characters seem real

Identify the Point of View Barry cradled his father's head in the crook of his left arm, so that the man could tilt back his head, exposing the throat. He brushed fresh lather under the chin and into the hollows alongside the stretched tendons. His father's throat was fleshless and vulnerable, his head was a hard weight on the boy's arm. Barry was filled with unreasoning protective love. He lifted the razor and began to shave. Limited
