A PAPR has a blower that pulls air through attached filters. The blower then pushes the filtered air into the face piece, which covers all of the user's face. Since it is loose-fitting, it does not need to be fit tested and can be used by workers with facial hair.

National Fit Testing Services Importance of Maintaining Seals For proper respiratory protection, the seals on the face piece must be maintained: Employees may not have facial hair under the sealing surfaces of the face piece. Facial hair cannot interfere with valve function. If an employee wears glasses or PPE while using respirators, it must be worn in a manner that does not interfere with the seals. This person will need to shave before using a respirator.
