Preliminaries Divide into small groups of 3. Read the excerpt of the second Gore-Bush Presidential Debate, October 11, 2000 handout. Discuss the following questions in groups and be prepared to share out: What point is each candidate making about gun control? How does each candidate make his point?

Objectives: The students will be able to define the relationship between public debate and a democratic form of government. The students will be able to define common rhetorical devices and techniques of propaganda. The students will be able to prepare written scripts for an upcoming debate between the characters Snowball and Napoleon.

Focus Lesson: Snowball… Literary Terms Democracy Logical Appeal Emotional Appeal Debate Preparation What is your stance on the proposed windmill? How do you think Animal Farm should go about providing defense for the farm against potential security threats? What do you see are your greatest attributes as a candidate for leading the animals of Animal Farm?

Focus Lesson: Snowball… Small Groups (6 groups of 3-4): debate scripts Group 1: Snowball’s position on the windmill Group 2: Napoleon’s position on the windmill Group 3: Snowball’s position on defending the farm Group 4: Napoleon’s position on defending the farm Group 5: the overall strengths and/or attributes of Snowball Group 6: the overall strengths and/or attributes of Napoleon.

Homework (due 2/20): Edit, proofread, and practice reading the debate scripts to be read aloud during our debate which will take place on Feb. 20.
