Bhagavad-Gita As It Is Chapter 13 Text 30-35 Body – Desire Fulfilling Machine Brahman Conception Supreme and Individual Consciousness Process of Liberation

Text 30 prakṛtyaiva ca karmāṇi kriyamāṇāni sarvaśaḥ yaḥ paśyati tathātmānam akartāraḿ sa paśyati One who can see that all activities are performed by the body, which is created of material nature, and sees that the self does nothing, actually sees.

Body - Desire Fulfilling Machine Body is a desire fulfilling machine designed by the supreme lord The Body is made by material nature under the direction of Supersoul One is forced to act for happiness or distress according to his bodily construction The body is given according to one’s past desires The self is outside all these bodily activities The transcendental vision of living entity when developed makes one separate from bodily activities. Such a living entity is an actual seer.

Text 31 yadā bhūta-pṛthag-bhāvam eka-stham anupaśyati tata eva ca vistāraḿ brahma sampadyate tadā When a sensible man ceases to see different identities due to different material bodies and he sees how beings are expanded everywhere, he attains to the Brahman conception.

Brahman Conception Various bodies arise due to different desires of the individual soul and do not actually belong to the soul itself In the material conception of life we find some one demigod, human being, dog cat etc. This is material vision not actual vision Spirit Soul is one, due to contact with material nature gets different types of bodies Freed from material differentiations one becomes purified in his consciousness and able to develop Krishna Consciousness in his Spiritual Identity

Text 32 anāditvān nirguṇatvāt paramātmāyam avyayaḥ śarīra-stho 'pi kaunteya na karoti na lipyate Those with the vision of eternity can see that the imperishable soul is transcendental, eternal, and beyond the modes of nature. Despite contact with the material body, O Arjuna, the soul neither does anything nor is entangled.

Living Entity is Eternal, appears to be born due to the birth of the material body In spite of his being situated in material body, he is transcendental and eternal By nature he is sat-chit-ananda He never engages himself in any material activities, therefore the activities performed due to his contact with material bodies do not entangle him Brahman Conception

Text 33 yathā sarva-gataḿ saukṣmyād ākāśaḿ nopalipyate sarvatrāvasthito dehe tathātmā nopalipyate The sky, due to its subtle nature, does not mix with anything, although it is all-pervading. Similarly, the soul situated in Brahman vision does not mix with the body, though situated in that body.

Another example – Air enters into water, mud, stool etc. still it does not mix with anything Due to his subtle nature, living entity even though situated in varieties of bodies is aloof of them This vision is impossible with material eyes. Scientists cannot see how the living entity is in contact with this body and how he is out of it after the destruction of the body Brahman Conception

Text 34 yathā prakāśayaty ekaḥ kṛtsnaḿ lokam imaḿ raviḥ kṣetraḿ kṣetrī tathā kṛtsnaḿ prakāśayati bhārata O son of Bharata, as the sun alone illuminates all this universe, so does the living entity, one within the body, illuminate the entire body by consciousness.

Supreme and Individual Consciousness Consciousness is the proof of the presence of the soul as sunshine or light is the proof of the presence of the sun Consciousness is not a product of the combination of matter The consciousness of the living entity although qualitatively one with the supreme consciousness is not supreme The consciousness of one particular body does not share with that of another body But the Supersoul who is situated in all bodies as the friend of the individual soul is conscious of all bodies

Text 35 kṣetra-kṣetrajñayor evam antaraḿ jñāna-cakṣuṣā bhūta-prakṛti-mokṣaḿ ca ye vidur yānti te param Those who see with eyes of knowledge the difference between the body and the knower of the body, and can also understand the process of liberation from bondage in material nature, attain to the supreme goal.

Process of Liberation One should know the distinction between the body, the owner of the body and the Supersoul Understand the process of liberation as described in verses 13.8-12 Faithful person –> good association to hear of God –> gradual enlightenment From Spiritual master one can learn to distinguish between matter and spirit Spiritual master by various instructions teaches his students to get free from the material concept of life

Summary Body is matter and can be analyzed by with its twenty-four elements Body is Gross manifestation, Mind and Psychological effects are subtle manifestations Symptoms of life are the interaction of these features Material world is working by the conjunction of the soul and the twenty-four elements One who can see the constitution of the whole material manifestation and can also see the situation of the Supreme Soul becomes eligible for transfer to the spiritual world
