Tuesday, January 05, 2016 Metal carbonate and acid reactions Objectives 1.Make and record accurate qualitative measurements and observations 2. Describe how metal carbonates react with acid 3.Write word and symbol equations to describe the reaction.

What do you think? What has happened to the statue? THINK- on your own SHARE- your ideas with the class PAIR- discuss with your partners

Method A.Measure 25cm 3 of 1.0M hydrochloric acid (HCl) into the conical flask B.Weigh out 4g of marble chips (calcium carbonate). C.Set up the apparatus as shown in the diagram ready to collect the gas. D.Place the marble chips into the acid and stopper the flask. E.Collect gas in the small test tube until full, then stopper to prevent loss. F.Once full, stop reaction by adding excess water and RECOVER marble chips in the sieve. G.Test the gas by adding a small amount of limewater to your test tube, placing the bung firmly in the tube and shaking gently. H.Record all observations in a table. Let’s investigate metal carbonates
