Acid + Metal Reactions
2
Starter: Use a green pen to work through your exercise book and respond to the comments I have given after you work.
3
You will need: 1 piece magnesium ribbon. 5cm 3 HCl 2 boiling tubes Boiling tube rack. Splint Bunsen burner and mat. Safety: Hair tied back. Ties tucked in. Stood up, chairs/bags under bench. Safety glasses.
4
Record your observations. When magnesium ribbon was added to the hydrochloric acid…. When we tested the gas with… This means that when an acid is reacted with a metal…. Acid + Metal Salt + Hydrogen Write the equation for the reaction in the experiment.

Questions pH of solution: Colour of universal indicator: Description: 1(ii)strong acid (i)green(iv) 14(iii)(v) 1. Complete the following table: 2. The following equation shows the reaction that takes place between an acid and an alkali: a) Name this type of reaction.(1 mark) b) Write a word equation that shows the reaction between nitric acid and potassium hydroxide.(1 mark) c) Write a symbol equation for the same reaction.(1 mark) (Marks available: 3)

3. Complete the following equations: a) calcium carbonate + nitric acid = b) sodium carbonate + sulphuric acid = c) Ethanoic acid + sodium hydroxide = (Marks available: 3) Salt:Acid:Alkali: Ammonium nitrate Potassium phosphate 4. Some salts are made in industry for use as fertilizers in farming. Complete the table showing acid and alkali used to make these salts (4 marks)

Answers 1. (i) 7/(ii) red/(iii) blue/purple/(iv) neutral/(v) strong alkali 2. a) Neutralisation. b) nitric acid + potassium hydroxide → potassium nitrate + water (Mark is gained for writing potassium nitrate as the salt). c) HNO 3(aq) + KOH (aq) → KNO 3(aq) + H 2 0 (aq) 3. a) = calcium nitrate + carbon dioxide + water b) = sodium sulphate + water + carbon dioxide c) = sodium ethanoate + water Salt:Acid:Alkali: Ammonium nitrateNitric acidAmmonium hydroxide Potassium phosphatePotassium hydroxidePhosphoric acid
