5. “The Jungle” by Upton Sinclair This become the best seller that changed America. Equated to be the “Uncle Tom’s Cabin” of reform in American city life. It brought to the attention of the general public and political leaders the truth about what was going on in our cities and industries. It especially focused on the meat processing and food supplies to our citizens. (watch the video)

6. Progessivist: a person who wants change. Four Goals of a Progressivist :(Do you agree with them?) 1. Gov’t should be accountable to the citizens. 2. Gov’t should curb the power and influence of the wealthy. 3. Gov’t should be given expanded powers so it could become more active in improving citizens lives. 4. Gov’t should become more efficient and less corrupt.

7. Student assignment Write a one page response to the goals of the Progressivists. Express what you think about each goal and support your views with facts, examples, or reasoning's. Remember an essay needs an introduction, main body, and conclusion.

8. Active Progressivists Students locate and determine the works of: Henry George Edward Bellamy Henry George focused on the impact of Poverty and the need to change things. Edward Bellamy discuss ways to improve life that resembled utopia.

9. Reformist terms Muckrakers – people who identify some problem, wrong doing, or issue and brought it to the attention of the public. Collective bargaining – method that Unions used in negotiations on behalf of all the workers. Socialists – A political theory where the government would own property and business', control incomes, & have major influence on citizens lives.

10. Various Women’s groups that got involved: NCL – National Consumers League Looked into production methods, standards, and impacts to push change. Florence Kelly – focused on work place reforms, her work led to child labor laws being introduced. Mary “Mother” Jones – she inspired people to join Unions to fight for improved work conditions.
