The Sol Feinstone Student Council presents The 2008 Great American Fundraiser: A Walk for Water

Raising money for the Life-Giving Water Fund …which provides water for remote villages in Zambia – a country in Africa

People in rural Zambia usually live in huts that are clustered together. Families share work, belongings and daily experiences.

Corn is the main crop. The country experiences two seasons: A rainy season and a dry season.

Each day, women and children must walk up to 5 miles to collect water – often unclean water - from streambeds and rivers

Girls are expected to do the domestic chores, so they join their mothers for the long walk for water. Many children cannot attend school because they have to walk for water instead.

Walking for water is a problem in Zambia because…. The water is often dirty and can make people who drink it sick. People can die from the dirty water. 9 The Life-Giving Water Fund raises money to drill deep wells that tap into underground water tables. Below is a picture of a new well.

When a well is drilled, people in the village have clean water close to their huts. They no longer get sick from the water and the children can attend school.
