Samulnori is a genre of Korea folk music. If you break the word down, “samul”means “four things”in Korean, and “nori”means “to play”. The four “things” involved in samulnori are four percussion instruments. The k’kwaenggwari is a small gong made primarily of brass. You hold it with one hand and use your other hand to strike it with a bamboo mallet. The player of the k’Kwaenggwari is usually considered the leader of the quartet. The ching is a larger gond that is played with a padded stick. The third instrument is the janggu. It’s a two-sided hourglass-shaped drum, which is played with two different sticks. The buk is the last of the four percussion instruments. It is made of hollowed-out wood with leather on each side. Played with a single drumstick, the buk provides the bass sound of samulnori. The k’kwaenggwari, ching, janggu and buk each represent an element in nature-lightning, wind, rain, and clouds respectively.
