August 27, 2011 Cell Wall is undergoing a Gram Stain in a bacterial cell! If I have a lot of peptidoglycan, I will stain a dark purple and be gram positive. If I stain a light purple, I don’t have as much peptidoglycan and will be gram negative. WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT ME MADE OF: Plant cells Polysaccharides (cellulose, hemicellulose, pectin) Glycoproteins Phenolic esters (ferulic and coumaric acids) Minerals (calcium and boron) Enzymes Lignin (only found in secondary cell walls) Bacterial cells Peptidoglycan (sugars, and amino acids, amount differs for each kind of bacteria) Polymer (N-acetyl glucosamine, N- acetyl muramic acid, amino acids) FUNCTION: - Protects everything inside the cell - Provides rigidity to plants - Regulates growth of plants and protects it from disease -Provides a porous area for the distribution of water and other nutrients -Prevents cell from bursting due to osmotic stress RESOURCES USED: http://www.ccrc.uga.edu/~mao/intro/ouline.htm http://micro.magnet.fsu.edu/cells/plants/cellwall.html http://biology.clc.uc.edu/courses/bio106/bacteria.htm http://www.microbiologytext.com/index.php?module=Book&func=displ ayarticle&art_id=60 http://www.plantcell.org/content/11/4/587.full Information Pictures www.qiagen.com www.micro.magnet.fsu.edu www.ccrc.uga.edu www.library.thinkquest.org www.student.ccbcmd.edu www.wpclipart.com www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov MISCELLANEOUS: -A middle lamella is on the outside of the primary wall and connects surrounding cells, allowing them to communicate. -Plant cells have a primary cell wall that moves with them as they grow, and once they stop growing, they form a more rigid secondary cell wall. - 2 kinds of bacterial cells: gram positive (single layer) and negative (3 layers) Video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GaIPFs52cUU
