Raising ot Lazarus from Death: John 11

Let Us Read John 11:1-25,38-43

The Miracle That Defies Logic

1.It defies logic on the part of the sisters 2.It defies logic on the part of the disciples 3.Response of the Jewish religious leaders really defies logic

1.It defies logic on the part of the sisters Now a man named Lazarus was sick. He was from Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha. 2 (This Mary, whose brother Lazarus now lay sick, was the same one who poured perfume on the Lord and wiped his feet with her hair.) 3 So the sisters sent word to Jesus, “Lord, the one you love is sick.” 4 When he heard this, Jesus said, “This sickness will not end in death. No, it is for God’s glory so that God’s Son may be glorified through it.” 5 Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus. 6 So when he heard that Lazarus was sick, he stayed where he was two more days,

1.It defies logic on the part of the sisters 21 “Lord,” Martha said to Jesus, “if you had been here, my brother would not have died. 32 When Mary reached the place where Jesus was and saw him, she fell at his feet and said, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.” 35 Jesus wept. 36 Then the Jews said, “See how he loved him!” 37 But some of them said, “Could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man have kept this man from dying?”

2.It defies logic on the part of the disciples 11 After he had said this, he went on to tell them, “Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep; but I am going there to wake him up.” 12 His disciples replied, “Lord, if he sleeps, he will get better.” 13 Jesus had been speaking of his death, but his disciples thought he meant natural sleep. 14 So then he told them plainly, “Lazarus is dead, 15 and for your sake I am glad I was not there, so that you may believe. But let us go to him.” 16 Then Thomas (also known as Didymus) said to the rest of the disciples, “Let us also go, that we may die with him.”

2.It defies logic on the part of the disciples 7 and then he said to his disciples, “Let us go back to Judea.” 8 “But Rabbi,” they said, “a short while ago the Jews there tried to stone you, and yet you are going back?” 9 Jesus answered, “Are there not twelve hours of daylight? Anyone who walks in the daytime will not stumble, for they see by this world’s light. 10 It is when a person walks at night that they stumble, for they have no light.”

Jesus in the face of danger was not presumptuous: John 8:57-59 57 “You are not yet fifty years old,” they said to him, “and you have seen Abraham!” 58 “Very truly I tell you,” Jesus answered, “before Abraham was born, I am!” 59 At this, they picked up stones to stone him, but Jesus hid himself, slipping away from the temple grounds.

3.Response of the Jewish religious leader really defies logic 45 Therefore many of the Jews who had come to visit Mary, and had seen what Jesus did, believed in him. 46 But some of them went to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done. 47 Then the chief priests and the Pharisees called a meeting of the Sanhedrin. 53 So from that day on they plotted to take his life. 54 Therefore Jesus no longer moved about publicly among the people of Judea. Instead he withdrew to a region near the wilderness, to a village called Ephraim, where he stayed with his disciples.

UNTIL HIS ENEMIES MADE A FOOTSTOOL …12but He, having offered one sacrifice for sins for all time, SAT DOWN AT THE RIGHT HAND OF GOD, 13waiting from that time onward UNTIL HIS ENEMIES BE MADE A FOOTSTOOL FOR HIS FEET.1213 Hebrew 13:12-13 1 Why do the nations conspire and the peoples plot in vain? 2 The kings of the earth rise up and the rulers band together against the L ORD and against his anointed, saying, 3 “Let us break their chains and throw off their shackles.” 4 The One enthroned in heaven laughs; the Lord scoffs at them. 5 He rebukes them in his anger and terrifies them in his wrath, saying, 6 “I have installed my king on Zion, my holy mountain.”

Why the Delay?

Why the seeming delay? 1.Demonstrate the greater glory of God 2.Develop faith and maturity 3.Determine faith and test obedience 4.Deliver from potential harm or the lesser blessing 5.Discipline 6.Destiny

1.Demonstrate the greater glory of God 4 When he heard this, Jesus said, “This sickness will not end in death. No, it is for God’s glory so that God’s Son may be glorified through it.” “But, Lord,” said Martha, the sister of the dead man, “by this time there is a bad odor, for he has been there four days.” 40 Then Jesus said, “Did I not tell you that if you believe, you will see the glory of God?”

1.Demonstrate the greater glory of God

2.Develop faith and build maturity

2 Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, 3 because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. 4 Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. James 1:2-4

2.Develop faith and build maturity

3.Determine faith & test obedience 2 Then Jesus told his disciples a parable to show them that they should always pray and not give up. Luke 18:1

3.Determine faith & test obedience

4.Deliver from potential harm 7 Jesus replied, “You do not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand.”. John 13:7

5.Discipline – consequence of sin "The LORD was angry with Israel and made them wander in the wilderness for forty years until the entire generation that sinned in the LORD's sight had died. Numbers 32:13

6.Destiny – an appointed time There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens: 2 a time to be born and a time to die,a time to plant and a time to uproot,…. 11 He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end. Ecclesiastes 3:1ff, 11

Why the seeming delay? 1.Demonstrate the greater glory of God 2.Develop faith and maturity 3.Determine faith and test obedience 4.Deliver from potential harm 5.Discipline 6.Destiny

Live a day at a time 13 Now listen, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money.” 14 Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes. 15 Instead, you ought to say, “If it is the Lord’s will, we will live and do this or that.” James 4:13-15 34 “So don’t be anxious about tomorrow. God will take care of your tomorrow too. Live one day at a time. Matthew 6:34
