1. April 18, 1775
On the evening of April 18, 1775, Paul Revere was sent for by Dr. Joseph Warren and instructed to ride to Lexington, Massachusetts, to warn Samuel Adams and John Hancock that British troops were marching to arrest them.
After being rowed across the Charles River to Charlestown by two associates, Paul Revere borrowed a horse from his friend Deacon John Larkin.
While in Charlestown, he verified that the local "Sons of Liberty" committee had seen his pre-arranged signals. (Two lanterns had been hung briefly in the bell-tower of Christ Church in Boston, indicating that troops would row "by sea" across the Charles River to Cambridge, rather than marching "by land" out Boston Neck.
Revere had arranged for these signals the previous weekend, as he was afraid that he might be prevented from leaving Boston).

2. Early Life: Paul Revere was born in December 1734 in Boston's North End to Apollos Rivoire, a French Huguenot immigrant and Deborah Hichborn (Hitchbourn). Rivoire had changed his name to Paul Revere some time after his arrival in America. The elder Revere was a goldsmith and soon headed a household with at least nine and possibly as many as twelve children. The younger Paul was the second oldest child and the eldest surviving son. He was educated at the North Writing School and apprenticed under his father, learning gold and silversmithing. In 1754 when Paul was nineteen, his father died and Paul took over the family business. In 1756, Revere volunteered to fight the French in the Crown Point expedition at Lake George, New York and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the colonial artillery. On August 17, 1757, he married Sarah Orne, with whom he had eight children. In 1758, his firth child Deborah is born and in 1760, his first son, Paul Jr. is born .Revere also added engraving, political cartoons, seals, bookplates, coats-of arms and dental devices to his silversmithing. His engraving of the Boston Massacre has become famous. On May 3, 1773, Sarah died and on October 10, 1773, he married Rachel Walker. As a member of the Masonic Lodge of St. Andrews and the head of the mechanic class, Revere came in contact with John Hancock, Samuel Adams and Dr. Joseph Warren. He helped organize the Boston Tea Party and participated as one of the "Indians." He brought then word of the Boston Tea Partyy to New York and Philadelphia. In the Spring of 1774, he rode to New York City and Philadelphia again telling of the Boston Port Bill, then covered the Suffolk Resolves to Philadelphia. In 1774, he gathered intelligence by watching the movements of the British troops. He also served as courier for the Massachusetts Committee of Correspondence, even carrying dispatches to the Continental Congress.

3. Timeline of Paul Revere’s Ride
1775 April Paul Revere rides to Concord to warn the Patriots to move their powder stores. April 10:00 P.M. – Paul Revere begins his Midnight Ride to Lexington. April 11:00 P.M. – Paul Revere arrives in Charlestown. April 12:00 A.M. – Paul Revere arrives at Reverend Josiah Clarke's house in Lexington. April 1:00 A.M. – Paul Revere, William Dawes and Dr. Samuel Prescott are interecepted by British officers. Dawes and Prescott escape. April 2:00 A.M. – Paul Revere is released. April 3:00 A.M. – Paul Revere arrives back at Reverend Clarke's house in Lexington. April 5:00 A.M. – Paul Revere is on the outskirts of Lexington when the shot was fired.

5. Sybil Ludington – The Female Paul Revere
Everyone has heard of Paul Revere's ride through the night to alert a sleeping countryside of the coming of the British troops. Less well known is an equally heroic ride, undertaken in 1777 by a 16-year-old farm girl.
Sybil Ludington was the eldest of Col. Henry and Abigail Ludington's 12 children. They lived in Fredericksburg, New York (now called Ludingtonville), where her father, a veteran of the French and Indian war, was a gristmill owner and commander of the area militia.
On the night of April 26, 1777, the Ludington family was getting ready for bed when they were startled by a hard knock on the door. It was a messenger from Danbury, Connecticut, who had come to request the aid of the Fredericksburg militia. Two thousand British troops had attacked that Connecticut town; the Continental Army's depot of munitions and food there was destroyed and much of the town was left in flames.
Obviously, Colonel Ludington could not personally both supervise the muster of his troops and ride to alert them. Sybil voluntered to make the ride in his place.
Authorities vary on the length of her ride; some say it was 20, some say 40, miles. In any case, it was raining hard. But as Sybil urged her bay horse, Star, onward, she could see the sky light up from the glow of the flaming town. "The British are burning Danbury--muster at Ludington's," she shouted at the farmhouses of the militiamen.
When, soaked from the rain and exhausted, she returned home, most of the 400 soldiers were ready to march.
After the Battle of Ridgefield, as the resulting skirmish was later known, Sybil was congratulated for her heroism by friends and neighbors--and by Gen. George Washington.
