3 Lesson 1- What is an entrepreneur? Aims -Establish expectations for Business Department. -Understand what an entrepreneur is and what qualities they have.

4 Unit 1: Introduction to small businesses Spotting a business opportunity market research,adding value, methods of setting up your business.  Showing enterprise risk taking, innovation and resilience.  Putting a business idea into practice How to estimate costs, revenue & profits. Sources of funding.  Making the start-up effective The 4ps, customer service, HR  Understanding the economic context Market forces and government intervention

5 Unit 5: Introduction to Economic Understanding. How can I start to think like an economist? Supply & Demand, Scarcity, Cost Benefit Analysis Risk or certainty? Economic uncertainty and what the government can do about it. Big or small? Monopoly power. Controlling big business. Is growth good? How economies grow & how economic growth is measured. Sustainable businesses- green growth. Is the world fair? Is everyone equal? How can trade make us more equal? How can the government help?

6 What we expect from you Arrive on time Appropriate language Seating plan Homework-once a week Correct equipment No eating/chewing No mobiles/mp3 players Use of computers-a privilege not a right You are responsible for saving & organising your work!

27 Good vs Bad Research The Good Using a variety of sites Using recommended sites Reading the source, taking notes and then writing up the information in your own words. Explaining the information – what does it mean? –what impact does this have? Referencing Being specific with search engines “Alan sugar personal wealth” Trying different phrases Checking the date! The Bad Only using Wikipedia Only using one website Copying and pasting information Being vague with search engines e.g. “entrepreneur” Not making a not of where the info is from

28 Ways to find it Use speech marks to get search for an exact phrase “Jamie Oliver businesses” Check the website you are being shown links to.co.uk = companies.gov.uk= government.org.uk= charities/pressure groups etc Give specific details e.g. date, what information you want Try rephrasing what you are looking for e.g. “How much is Alan sugar worth?” could be “Alan sugar personal wealth”
