E.Q.: What is Literary Analysis? Literary Analysis is what we focus on in our Language Arts Class. A. Literary refers to literature/books/ novels B. Analysis means to study/examine something deeply C. Therefore, Literary Analysis means to study literature carefully looking for deeper meaning within the text. Focus is on theme or character development and how these things affect the story line.

II. Fiction A.A narrative story that uses made up characters or events is called fiction. B.Some stories are all fiction, while others may be based on real people or events, but still tell a fictional story. III. Subgenres of Fiction A.Realistic Fiction- imaginative writing set in the real, modern world. B.Historical Fiction- fiction set in the past (ex. Boy of the Painted Cave) C.Fantasy-Literature that contains at least one fantastic or unreal element. D.Scientific Fiction-fiction based on real or possible scientific developments (usually set in the future or have technological advances, but characters still face problems people face today.

IV. NONFICTION (A.K.A. Expository Text) A.Writing that tells about real people, places, and events are called nonfiction. There are two types of literary nonfiction: informative and factual. B.The main purpose is to inform and explain. C.Types of nonfiction: autobiographies, biographies, essays, news articles. Example: Biography of Anne Frank

V. Poetry A.Poetry is a type of literature where ideas, images, and feelings are expressed in only a few words. Most poetry is written in lines which may take the form of stanzas. Poetry will combine words to create vivid pictures to express their ideas. - Examples: acrostic poems, Haiku, free verse, and cinquains.

VI. Drama A.Drama is a form of literature that is performed before an audience. In drama, the story is presented by characters. The written form of drama is the script. The script gives all the characters instructions about performing the play. B. Two important forms of drama are comedy and tragedy. - Examples: “Romeo and Juliet” - Examples: “Romeo and Juliet” and “Wicked” and “Wicked”

Create a Literary Genre Mini Book that includes the following: 1.Cover page: name (first last), date, period, and creative title 2.Page 1 (back of cover page) Literary Genre Definition with picture 3.Page 2 Fiction notes and picture 4.Page 3 Types of Fiction notes and picture 5.Page 4 Nonfiction notes and picture 6.Page 5 Poetry notes and picture 7.Page 6 Drama notes and picture 8.Each page MUST have a decorative border with appropriate picture 9.Personal Best Style!
