Physical and Chemical Changes
2
Objective: Chemical/Physical Change □ The learner will be able to distinguish between a physical and chemical change.
3
Matter □ Matter is everywhere. □ Matter is anything that takes up space and has mass. □ Matter is constantly experiencing both chemical and physical changes.
4
Physical Change □ Physical changes occur when matter changes its property but not its chemical nature. □ Physical property changes could include a change in: texture, shape, size, color, odor, volume, mass, weight, and density.

Physical Change
6
Physical Change-Tell me why!
7
Mixtures When two or more substances are combined together we call it a mixture. A mixture is a another kind of physical change.
8
Physical Changes melting evaporation condensation freezing *sublimation *deposition solid to liquid liquid to gas gas to liquid liquid to solid solid to gas (sk gas to solid
9
Chemical Change Chemical changes are changes matter undergoes when it becomes new or different matter.
10
Possible Signs of a Chemical Change □Heat or light is produced that wasn’t there before. □Fumes or smoke are produced. □The substance smells different. □bubbling or fizzing □The substance changes color.
11
Chemical Change □ A chemical change occurs when fireworks are used. Fireworks are made of metals such as magnesium and copper. These change chemically as they light up the sky.

15
Is it a chemical or physical change? □ Breaking water up by separating it into hydrogen and oxygen Chemical Change Physical Change
16
Is it a chemical or physical change? □ Cutting paper Chemical Change Physical Change
17
Is it a chemical or physical change? □ Crushing an aspirin Chemical Change Physical Change
18
Is it a chemical or physical change? □ Metal rusting Chemical Change Physical Change
19
Is it a chemical or physical change? □ An egg rotting Chemical Change Physical Change
20
Is it a chemical or physical change? □ An egg breaking Chemical Change Physical Change
