2 1.) What are monomers? Provide at least two examples from the reading. Single, small molecules that can assemble into larger complex molecules. (Mono = one) EX: simple sugars, fatty acids, amino acids, nucleic acids

3 2.) What is a subunit? Small part of something larger. Ex: a single brick is a subunit of a house.

4 3.) What are polymers? Molecules made up of many monomers (Poly = many)

HINT: there’s a functional group involved Break a bond by attaching the HYDROXYL group (--OH) to one atom in one monomer and a hydrogen atom (H) to an atom in the other monomer. The OH and the H come from water (H 2 O)
