TODAY IN LA: 1. LA ROUTINE: RECORD HOMEWORK, INDEPENDENTLY READ. 2. WRITING AN OBJECTIVE SUMMARY FOR FICTION TUESDAY, DECEMBER 1ST
2
TASK 1: FACT VS. OPINION A FACT is a detail that can be proven true. An OPINION is what someone thinks, it can’t be proven true or false. Fill in the chart with either a fact or opinion to counter what is already in the chart. The first has been done for you.
3
FactOpinion The Harry Potter books were written by J.K. Rowling. The third Harry Potter book was the best. Corn tastes better than carrots. Painting is an art. Spring is the best season of the year. Corn is a vegetable Spring is one of the four seasons Da Vinci was the world’s greatest painter
4
You can prove each fact is true. Just look it up in a book or the internet. But other people may have different ideas about the Harry Potter books, carrots versus corn, the greatest painter, the best season! Authors use facts and opinions to persuade you to think or do something. The author states an idea, and then gives details to convince you to agree. Details may be facts, dates, statistics, or words that affect your feelings. Only you can decide if the evidence is strong enough to convince you. Commercials and print ads are familiar forms of persuasive writing.
5
TASK 2: NOTE TAKING Objective Summary: a summary not influenced by personal feelings, interpretations or prejudice; based on FACTS; unbiased. When summarizing fiction, you must include the elements of a good story! From Unit 1! FACTS
6
CHALLENGE: WHAT ARE THE ELEMENTS OF A GOOD STORY? RECORD WHAT YOU REMEMBER IN THE BOX Point of View Plot Setting Main Character(s) Conflict Theme (if possible)
7
STEPS TO WRITING AN OBJECTIVE SUMMARY FOR FICTION 1.State a brief MAIN IDEA: This is a general introduction to the summary and describes what the reading is mostly about. 2.Explain each of the elements of a god story in more detail. 3.Conclude with a sentence that includes higher- level thinking – this may include a prediction or theme statement that shows a deeper understanding of the reading.
8
TASK 3: IDENTIFY THE ELEMENTS IN THIS EXAMPLE SUMMARY “Nightmare in Yellow” by Fredric Brown takes place on the protagonist’s 40 th birthday. The protagonist has been embezzling money so he is planning to run away and kill his wife in order to not get caught. At dinner, his wife takes her time, and this bothers the protagonist because he plans to kill her at 8:46 pm. They finally go home, but they are still on the front porch. At 8:46, they are on the front porch. Instead of going inside, he hits her over the head right there. When he opens the door, the guests at his party shout “Surprise” and he has been caught.
