2 Mission Statement (taken from corestandards.org) O The Common Core State Standards provide a consistent, clear understanding of what students are expected to learn, so teachers and parents know what they need to do to help them. O The standards are designed to be robust and relevant to the real world, reflecting the knowledge and skills that our young people need for success in college and careers. O With American students fully prepared for the future, our communities will be best positioned to compete successfully in the global economy.

3 Why the Change?? O Ensure all students (no matter where they live) are prepared for college and career. O Provide clear and consistent expectations for students, parents, and teachers. O Clearer “roadmap” for learning.

4 6 Shifts in ELA/Literacy O Read as much non fiction as fiction; O Learn about the world by reading; O Read more challenging material closely; O Discuss reading using evidence; O Write non-fiction using evidence; O Increase academic vocabulary.

5 6 Shifts in Mathematics O Focus: learn more about fewer, key topics; O Build skills within and across grades; O Develop speed and accuracy; O Really know it, Really do it; O Use it in the real world; O Think fast AND solve problems.

6 Student/Parent Role with English Language Arts Students must… O Read more non-fiction. O Get “smart” in science and social studies through reading. O Handle frustration and keep pushing. O Discuss what the author is “up to.” O Write well. Parents can… O Supply more non- fiction text. O Find books that explain. O Read challenging material with them. O Talk about the text. O Encourage writing at home.

7 Remember to… O Talk to your children… O Read to your children… O Listen to your children… O Sing with your children… O Make up silly rhymes and word games with your children.

8 Student/Parent Role with Mathematics Students must… O Spend more time on fewer topics. O Keep building on learning year after year. O Develop speed and accuracy. O Talk about why the math works. O Apply math in real world situations. Parents can… O Know what the priority work is for your child for their grade level. O Be aware of what your child struggled with last year and how that will affect learning this year. O Push their child to know/memorize basic math facts. O Notice whether your child really knows why the answer is what it is. O Ask your child to do the math that comes up in your daily life.
