II. Types of ions II. Types of ions ionic compounds formed from elements that change losing or gaining stablecompoundby losing or gaining electrons to become more stable compound. 2 types of ions: CATIONS ANIONS

Cations Ion with + charge, from loss of an electron Naming: Formed from metallic elements same but add the word “ion”. Al 3+ = Li + = Lithium ion Aluminum ion

Anions Ion with a - charge, from gaining electron Naming: Formed from nonmetallic elements ending change to“-ide” & add “ion”. P 3- = O 2- = oxide ion phosphide ion

Examples Change in electrons: 1 electron gained Formula of ion: Symbol: Br BrBr Bromide ion Name of ion: - Symbol: Mg Change in electrons: 2 electrons lost Formula of ion: Name of ion: Mg 2+2+ Magnesium ion

III. 2 Types of chemical formulas III. 2 Types of chemical formulas Molecular Formula Structural Formula H 2 O water No arrangement Shows arrangement

Diagrams/models - To show the arrangement of the atoms 3 dimensions - H H O What is the Structural Formula for water

Diatomic Molecules Br 2 I 2 N 2 Cl 2 H 2 O 2 F 2 What does the subscript 2 represent? Two atoms! Are these molecular or structural formulas? & NaCl ? Formula Unit

What is a Formula Unit or Empirical Formula subscripts reduced! Na 42 Cl 42 = NaCl Si 2 O 4 = SiO 2 Lowest whole # ratio of ions

Zinc Nitrate, Lithium Flouride, Potassium Nitrate, Magnesium Flouride (Binary?) Potassium Chloride AgF AlBr 3 KCl Aluminum Bromide Magnesium Chloride MgCl 2 Type I - simple CdF 2 ZnF 2 Silver Fluoride Zinc Fluoride Cadnium Fluoride
