2 When was the last time you were sick? Do you know what made you sick?
Did you have:     A stomach ache?     Fever?     Runny nose? Do you know what made you sick?

3 What are they?

4 Germs are: Tiny Organisms Living Things
They invade your body and make you sick

5 Germs are so tiny you need a microscope to see them

6 When germs enter the body they:
Steal our nutrients Steal our energy Leave "toxins" behind

8 Why do you think you should care about what the different kinds of germs are?
If you know about the different kinds of germs, then you can find out how to avoid them and how to fight them!

BACTERIA FUNGI PROTAZOA VIRUS

11 Bacteria Tiny creatures that get their food from their environment – sometimes our bodies! They live inside and outside of living things. They can cause infections inside our bodies like . . . Sore throats Ear infections Cavities pneumonia Back to types of Germs Not all bacteria are bad! Good bacteria can . . . Keep our bodies in balance – help us use nutrients we eat Be used for medicines to help us fight off bad germs!

12 Virus Viruses can not live outside of a living thing for very long. They can only live in another organism, which is called a host. When they get inside of people they can spread and make them sick. Viruses cause . . . Chickenpox, measles, and flu to name a few. Back to types of Germs

13 Fungi Plant like organisms that can not make their own food like other plants. They get their nutrients from other plants, people, and animals. They like damp, warm places. Most are not dangerous. 17 Air  •We can catch germs from sneezing and coughing.  •Germs are invisible and fly through the air.  When someone doesn’t cover their mouth all those germs fly through the air. 

18 Germ Activity •I am going to show you how germs travel.
•Germs are invisible but they can make us very sick.  •I am going to show you how germs travel. •I will put talcum powder in my hand.  Achoo!!!! •What just happened?  The way that the talcum powder flew through the air is the same way that your invisible germs fly through the air.

20 When Should You Wash Your Hands?
Hands should be washed after using the toilet, after playing with pets, before preparing or eating food, after sneezing or coughing and any other times your hands may become contaminated by germs.

21 Follow these simple steps every time you wash your hands:
Turn on the warm water. Put your hands under the warm water. Apply soap to hands and lather. Rub and scrub hands for 20 seconds. (Remember the palms, backs of hands, between fingers, under finger nails, and wash your wrists )

22 Rinse your hands and send the bubbles and germs down the drain.
Dry your hands with a paper towel. Use the towel to close the water faucets to prevent getting germs back on your hands. Do a good job and you will be less likely to catch colds or spread germs that cause sicknesses!
