 Which organelle is known as the “powerhouse” of the cell?  What does this organelle look like?  Why do you think it is folded so much?

 The folding allow more chemical reactions to take place.  These reactions produce energy for the cell!

 How often do you eat?  What happens if you don’t eat? How do you feel?

 Answer questions in the handout

 How many molecules in our body are central to converting the nutrients we gain from eating our food and transforming them into a form of energy our bodies can use readily? 1 10 100 1000  Answer: 1 = ATP, the currency of life

 The ability to do work.  All activities require energy. › Kidney function › Liver function › Heart

 Adenosine Triphosphate › Stores energy › Contains  Adenine  Ribose = sugar  Phosphate › Connected by a HIGH energy phosphate bond

 T = Tri = 3 phosphates  A D P = D = Di = 2 phosphates

 A-P-P-P = Energy Stored !  A-P-P = ADP = Energy Released  You break a phosphate and you release energy!

 Making sucrose  Making enzymes  Carry out life processes  Build membranes  Build cell organelles  Maintain homeostasis

 Read article to yourself  Answer handout questions in groups  http://www.thelilyfoundation.org.uk/ani mation/
