1 Development of Mine Explosion Ground Truth Smart Sensors Seismic Instrumentation Technology Symposium Albuquerque, NM June 16, 2011 Steven R. Taylor Phil Harben Rocky Mountain Geophysics, Inc. Steve Jarpe Jarpe Data Solutions, Inc. David B. Harris Deschutes Signal Processing, LLC SBIR Sponsored by Department of Energy – Office of Science Jarpe Data Solutions, Inc

2 SBIR Phase I One challenge of DOE GNEM Program is obtaining accurate locations over broad areas Obtaining accurate locations over broad areas requires GT data providing accurate epicenter and OT We are developing a Ground-Truth Monitoring System (GTMS) consisting of an inexpensive, lightweight smart sensor unit that can be mailed to and emplaced near large mining regions Jarpe Data Solutions, Inc

3 The Challenge * Monitoring Goals (standoff distance < 5 km) 1 km epicentral distance 0.1 second origin time 0.3 magnitude units Hardware Goals System cost < $1000 Weight < 1 lb Autonomous operation for 6 months Onboard processing to locate and characterize events * Large Mining Explosions

4 How do we achieve these goals? Ground Truth Monitoring System + Ground Truth Processing Center
