2 Background information ●October 26th, 1942 ●2 months after a severe baptism of fire near Guadalcanal, the USS Enterprise(CV-6) “The big E” is again at sea for a showdown with the Japanese fleet. ●8:30AM: Charles Irvine, Stockton Strong are flying carriers to the Santa Cruz Islands. ●Commander has told them to ATTACK!

5 About the war ● With the Battle of Guadalcanal raging, Allied and Japanese naval forces clashed repeatedly in the waters around the Solomon Island. ● The opposing forces passed with a brief aerial melee ensuing. 6 Facts ● The Battle of Santa Cruz was fought October 25-27, 1942, during World War II (1939-1945). ● Although historians have frequently chronicled the course of the Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands, some aspects of the 1942 carrier fight have remained poorly understood or virtually unknown. ● In Japanese sources the battle is referred to as the Battle of the South Pacific.
