NME stands for “New Musical Express”. It is a British music magazine which was created by Maurice Kinn and has been in production since 7 th March 1952. It became the bestselling magazine in Britain in the 1970s and was particularly associated with Gonzo journalism and Punk Rock due to the contributions of journalists such as Julie Burchill and Tony Parsons. It was also the first British paper to include a singles chart, which first appeared in the 14 November 1952 edition. Furthermore, it created the first UK Singles Chart; the first number one being: Al Martino with “Here in my heart”. The magazine initially published in a non-glossy, tabloid format on standard newsprint.

NME is well known for being written fairly informally. It is also known for its profound use of humour and wit. The language used can also be very coarse, demonstrating that it is intended for an older audience. Front page photography tends to be conventional with the artist posing centrally. NME is known for featuring particularly artistic and sometimes controversial front coves such as that of Beth Ditto posing naked. This is because of the rebellious nature of the Genres of music being represented and the way in which boundaries in these Genres are always being pushed.

People who prefer to listen to Indie/Rock music or new variations of these Genres. People from about 16 – 30 years of age. This is clear from how current the magazine is through the use of language and the bands included. Artists that currently feature heavily in the magazine include: The Arctic Monkeys Florence and the Machine Kasabian Biffy Clyro Ellie Goulding La Roux Vampire Weekend etc.
