2 T OPIC : Competitive and Sustainable Transport in the Adriatic and a Safer and more Secure Adriatic Sea as key features of the agenda of the Adriatic Ionian Macro-regional strategy S HORTCOMINGS : Adriatic Sea potential in terms of traffic capacity still not fully exploited Lack of joint strategy addressing future challenges linked to future increase of sea-traffic Cooperation and project making activity is still sectoral A CTIONS : Exploiting Competitive Advantages of the Adriatic Sea vis-à-vis North-European ports (i. e. shorter sea-routes) AII developing into a macro-regional strategy for the area Improving cooperation on Maritime safety and security P OTENTIAL PROJECTS : Improving ports management capacity and inter-modal connections AI macro-regional strategy as effective and harmonised institutional framework focused on maritime traffic management Exchange of expertise and experience among states in the region Competitive and Sustainable Maritime Transport and a Safer and More Secure Maritime Space

3 T OPIC :North Adriatic Sea basin as a high-risk area: focus on the environment S HORTCOMINGS : Increased traffic, not only of cargo-ships and tankers, but also of speed-boats and leisure-boats (and more so in summer) Increased environmental threats as a direct function of the increase of traffic but also of the increasing size of cargo-ships and their speed High incidence of collisions and congestion A CTIONS : Regulations enhancing coordination among ports Improving port infrastructure with reference to inter-modality (vs. transshipment) Improving port infrastructure with reference to anti-pollution measures (e. g.  CO2 emissions but also  equipment availability) P OTENTIAL PROJECTS : Improving inter-modality with a specific focus on rail-transport Improving PPPs (i.e. liberalisation of railways) and social corporate responsibility in port management Competitive and Sustainable Maritime Transport and a Safer and More Secure Maritime Space

4 T OPIC :Maritime surveillance and data availability on all aspects of maritime safety and security S HORTCOMING : Inter-operability of current security / safety measures on the inter-regional level A CTIONS : Cooperation in maritime search and rescue (S.A.R.) Establishment of a common system of recommended routes and a traffic separation scheme (TSS) Establishment of a common VTS in the Adriatic Area Automatic Identification System (AIS) management Modernisation of ADRIREP Enhancing cooperation for the control and management of maritime transport, environmental protection and fisheries P OTENTIAL PROJECTS : Adriatic regional server to improve data exchange and fusion with full regional availability Turning measures - such as VTS and AIS - mandatory throughout the Adriatic Sea basin Developing and establishing further TTS options Joint training for relevant stakeholders Increasing awareness on Adriatic sea safety culture Establish an Expert Working Group, a task force working towards the establishment of an efficient and integrated Traffic Monitoring System in the AII countries Spring 2013: first Expert Working Group meeting on the establishment of a common data-sharing platform Competitive and Sustainable Maritime Transport and a Safer and More Secure Maritime Space
