Good Job! We found it!

The following demonstration illustrates the problem again:

 Brandon has to find a book to read for a book report. He comes to you and tells you he has not read a complete book since sixth grade, and has no idea of where to begin. He also tells you he has to be back to class in fifteen minutes. You have fifteen minutes to teach him the three steps that will help him successfully find a book in your library. *If some steps don’t work on the first try, click it twice.* List Locate Look-Up

Step 1 Step 3 Step 2 Step 4 Step 5  Decide the purpose of your reading. When you ask Brandon this question, he jokingly replies, if I don’t do this book report I don’t graduate.  Make sure you have a scrap paper and a pencil or pen. When you ask Brandon if he has a scrap paper and something to write with, he replies with a no. You quickly show him where to find a pencil and some paper which is put out for student use.  If it is for leisure, make a list of books or kinds of books you may want to read. You realize Brandon isn’t reading for leisure because he emphatically pointed out he hasn’t read a book since sixth grade. You hope you can hook him with a book that will give him the desire to read more.  If it is for a class assignment make a list of different criteria that has to be met. For example, are there a certain number of pages required? Does the books have to be by a British Author? Brandon has told you this book report is required to graduate. You ask him if the teacher had any special criteria for the book they chose. He tells you the book has to be at least 200 pages and by a British Author.  Using a piece of notepaper, write down the possible books you may want to read so you can write the books you find and their call numbers next to them. Finally, you ask Brandon the most important question. What do you like to read? He replied with, “I don’t know.” You smile and ask him to list some of his favorite movies. He replies with a list of movies that involves wars and a hero saving the day. Because you know your library, you instantly know he is looking for a Jack Higgins book, a British Author with over 200 page books. Now you just have to help him discover this. You have him write down a fictional war book where someone saves the day. Return to the Problem Here

Step 1 Step 2 Step 3 Step 4 Step 5 Step 6 Step 7 Type in the subject or book title you want to look up. The red arrow shows where Brandon typed in his subject. Click the keyword search button. The red arrow shows where Brandon clicked. Look through titles to find a book that is close to what you are looking for. The red arrows points to some of the titles Brandon has to choose from. Click on the title to open its description. Brandon clicked on the title and it opened. Look at the number of pages, its description, whether it’s available or not, and decide if this may be a book you want to find in the library. The red arrow shows you number of pages, the blue arrow shows the availability. Brandon sees the book meets all of the criteria on his list. Locate the books Call Number under the picture of the book. Finally, write down the book name and call number on your list. Brandon grabs his list and writes: FIC HIG The Eagle Has Flown Return to the Problem Here

Step 1 Step 2 Return to the Problem Here  Locate the relevant “Area Code” as it pertains to the call number on the book. Brandon checked his list and found his area code was FIC. Using the appropriate number sequence or alphabetical order after the “Area Code” find your book in the library. FIC 92 MAG 000- 999 Correct Incorrect (please try again) Step 3 Physically look at the book, read the back and make sure this is the book you want. If it is take your book to the librarian and check it out. Click the area code of the library section Brandon should go to find his book.

 Brandon found that the book he wanted was the second in the series when he read the back cover. He instead chose to take the book next to it on the shelf, “The Eagle Has Landed” because it was the first in the series. Great Job! We found it!

Our library has many great resources that you may checkout for your school assignments or for your reading pleasure. This lesson is going to teach you how to use a call number to successfully find a book in our library.

Before we begin, I would like to know how many of you have ever made a phone call? What if you wanted to call someone in a different state? What would you have to put at the beginning of the number? If you said area code you are correct! Our library has five area codes. They are the different “States” in the library. They are FIC, REF, MAG, 000-999, and 92. The colored rectangles below are the different area codes.

To help you understand the call numbers better, it is important that you learn the different areas of the library. Click on the different areas below to learn about that section of the library. Area 1Area 3Area 2Area 5Area 4Area 7Area 6Area 8 Area 1: Computers ~ The picture of the computer at the bottom is the area you are currently sitting in. This is where you look up your books in order to find the correct call number. Area 2: The couches ~ Turn around and look at the back of the library. Do you see the couches? These are for your use. I want you to notice the grouping of shelves around them. Area 3: The fiction section ~ the red group of shelves ~ if you are looking for a book that has a call number with an area code of FIC, this is the section you will come to. Area 4: The non-fiction section ~ the green group of shelves ~ if you are looking for a book that has a call number with an area code of 000-999, this is the section you will come to. Area 7: The magazine section ~ the purple group of shelves ~ if you are looking for a book that has a call number with an area code of MAG, this is the section you will come to. Area 8: Circulation Desk ~ Look towards the front door you came through, see the long desk? The lady in this picture is in this area. This is where you checkout the books you would like and it is where you also return them.

Now take a few minutes and visit the different area codes of the library. Take a pencil and a paper with you and see if you can find what kind of books are in each of the five area codes. If you need help, look above each section of shelves at the signs that mark them.

 Work through this demonstration to help Amy find her book.  If the slide asks you to complete a task, the next button won’t come up until you complete it.  Again if you need help, please ask.

Amy’s friends have all read “A Child Called It.” She comes to you and tells you she has been trying to find it in the library for the last two lunch periods and doesn’t know where to look.

You ask Amy where she has been looking. She replied, I know the authors last name is Pelzer so I first looked over in the book report section in the PEL’s. Amy points over to the fiction section.

Knowing what you have learned about finding a book in the library, which of the following did Amy forget to do? Click the letter of the correct answer.  A.  B.  C.  D. List Look-Up Locate All the above Incorrect (please try again) Correct Great Job!

List You ask Amy if she has paper and something to write with. She happily pulls the paper and pencil out of her bag. Since you already know she wants to read “A Child Called It” by Pelzer you have her write down the information.

Look-up Step 1 Step 2 Step 3 Step 4 Now it’s time to help Amy look up her book. Step one has us type in our search. Step 2 is to click keyword search. The others work but keyword is by far the best choice. Step 3 is to look through the search results and find the book you want. Amy was happy to see there was a sequel to her book. Step 4 Usually has us look at the description of the book. But Amy knows what she wants. She only needs to know if the book is available and where to find it. Find the information and help Amy write the call number on her list.

Now that you have found the call number 92 PEL, Amy asks you why the book isn’t located in the numbered 000-999 non-fiction section. Click on the letter that best answers Amy’s question  A.  B.  C.  D. That’s just how it is It could It should be in FIC None of the above Incorrect (please try again) Correct! It could go in the 920 section because it is a biography! But because we have so many biography’s at BHS we created it it’s own section.

Before you move on to the “Locate” Step, see if you are able to find the book on your own. Then come back and go through the locate steps to see if they look familiar.

Locate Step 1 Step 2 Step 3

We found it! Good job! Amy is very happy and says Thank You!
