Warm-Up  What is a chemical reaction and how might you know that one has occurred?  Also, what are your predictions now for the two substances in the Mystery Mixture?  Quietly answer these questions in complete sentences on your yellow sheet.

Chemical Reactions  An interaction between substances (reactants) that results in new substances being formed (products).  substance-a form of matter with a unique composition and distinct properties.

Learning Target  Investigate the chemical and physical properties of nine substances and determine the two substances in a Mystery Mixture.

Steps for Success 1. Finish testing all nine combinations of substances with water (from yesterday). 2. Re-test the seven reactions and compare them to the Mystery Mixture reaction. 3. Discuss and determine the two substances in the Mystery Mixture as a group. 4. Write a detailed conclusion in your Science Notebook.

Conclusion  In paragraph form, answer these questions:  1. Why did we select the seven combinations to retest?  2. Which two substances do you think make up the mystery mixture?  3. Explain the chemical and physical properties that helped you determine the mystery mixture.  4. What evidence do you have to support your conclusion?  5. Explain three things you learned from this lab.

Lab Expectations  Stay with your group.  Stay on task.  Work quietly.  Wear your safety glasses!  Raise hands for questions.  Finish all parts-last day in the lab!  Clean-Up carefully at the end of class.
