Culture 1. Culture: is the characteristics of a group of people that makes them alike 2. Anthropology is the study of human beings.

Culture notes continued -2 Archeology is a branch of anthropology that studies the past culture through the things that remain such as graves, tools and pottery. Archeologist is a person who studies past cultures Artifacts are objects from the past

Elements of Culture Material – the things a society uses or makes such as clothing, shelter, food, tools and other things needed for both survival and enjoyment. Non Material: language, behavior such as customs, traditions, beliefs, values and interactions among people and the ways of going about daily activities.

Continue with non material A belief is a system of ideas by which people live. A ritual is a form of ceremony associated with religions and/or holidays. Socialization is the process of learning the beliefs and customs of your society.

Culture changes in 3 ways… Cultural Diffusion is the spread of ideas from one culture to another. Ex: Democracy was originally a Greek idea of way of government- now American

2 nd way that culture changes Invention is a new idea about how something can be made or done. Ex: Johannes Gutenberg invented a basic printing press so that books no longer had to be printed and copied by hand.

3 rd way that culture changes Innovation is an improvement on a cultures technology or inventions. Ex: We now use a personal computer and complicated copying machines to print, bind and create books in massive volumes.
