2 Examples of communication systems In this unit you will: See how people use communication systems to communicate with each other. Investigate how transactions are performed using communication systems.

4 Teleconferencing -an alternative to face-to-face meeting Teleconferencing allows people in different locations to participate in meetings without the problems and expenses of travel. An audio conference- is a single telephone call involving three or more people at different locations A video conference- allows people in different locations to see video images of each other on a screen.

5 People in different locations participate in meetings:- no costs: meals, accommodation, traveling, time Teleconferencing -an alternative to face-to-face meeting

6 Teleconferencing Advantages Reduces cost by not buying airfares, hotel rooms and meals Saves time and energy in travelling. Used in business and distance education Disadvantages Lack of personal contact. Limits the development of inter-personal relationships. Ideas could be misinterpreted through lack of personal contact.

7 Messaging systems A messaging system is used to send messages to people in different locations who may receive the message at a later time. Traditional systems –Telephone –Fax Voice mail Electronic mail

8 Traditional system Telephone system The telephone system allows voice communication along telephone lines between people in different locations. A telephone answering system is a messaging system. It stores messages and allows a person to hear the message at a later time.

9 Traditional system A fax, or facsimile -is a system of transmitting and reproducing documents over telephone lines. The fax machine scans a document and converts it into a bit-mapped image. PC equipped with a fax modem are capable of performing all the tasks of a fax machine.

10 Voice mail or V-mail Allows communications with other people by storing and forwarding spoken messages. The sender dials a v-mail number and records the message. It is digitally stored for the intended receiver. To retrieve a message, you dial into the v-mail system, enter an account number and password. You can listen, delete, save or send message to another person.

11 Electronic mail or Email Allows communication with other email users by sending and receiving electronic messages using a computer. It is correspondence(documents, text messages) transmitted between users’ mail boxes’ over a network: –Within an organisation’s internal network –Through the Internet

12 to use Email you need: -to use Email you need: 1.A computer that is linked to a network or the Internet. 2.An account with an ISP. ( Internet service provider) 3.An email address and 4.Email software.

13 The parts of an email address: The parts of an email address: miller@ozemail.edu.au miller-the user’s name (must be unique) @ -the at symbol that separates the two parts. ozemail- is the ISP. edu – means the domain is educational.(type of organisation) au – is the country domain (au is Australia)

15 Characteristics of email - the user does not have to be online to read a message. -messages can be written offline and sent later.(saves money) A sent email is stored on the server. After email is read, it can then be deleted, printed or stored. The user can reply by clicking on the reply button. The previous messages can be retained. (quoting) Sending messages you received to someone else is called forwarding.

17 Email software features An Address book :- is used to store email addresses. This saves time typing and avoids the problem of remembering addresses. A mailing list:- is a group of people who may want to receive the same message. A signature:- is several lines automatically appended to outgoing email messages.It may include an email address, Web site, graphic, occupation or telephone number

18 Electronic commerce -is the buying and selling of goods and services via the Internet 24-hour shopping with out leaving home. Global reach The ability to interact Provide customer info. Browse many stores. Use e-shopping trolley Regular customers can have their details stored.

19 EFTPOS Electronic Funds Transfer at Point-of-Sale Allows people to purchase goods and services using a credit or debit card. Transfer money from the customer’s bank to the retailer’s bank account. –Customer swipes card using terminal. –Choose account (Saving, cheque, credit). –Enter PIN as password (security measure to identify customer) –Terminal check PIN and availability of funds. –Transfer of funds from customer account to supermarket’s account.

20 Electronic banking Allows customers to: -view their account balances -view their transaction histories -transfer money between accounts -pay bills using Bpay Provides 24 hours banking services  Does not cater for cheque withdrawals.  Security issues  Data encryption – to secure data transfer.

21 WAP Wireless Application Protocol The wireless Internet lets you browse Web pages from a mobile phone or PDA. Wireless Application Protocol makes it possible to surf on the go. A WAP mobile phone A WAP PDA

22 The WAP - PDA Personal Digital Assistant The PDA is a tiny, fully functional computer that you can hold in one hand. Unlike the paper organizer, a PDA can hold your downloaded e- mail and play music. It replaces paper base calendars, note books, address books and calculators.

24 WAP- Bluetooth Bluetooth is a new wireless way for electronic devices to communicate with one another. It's wireless. When you travel, you don't have to worry about cables to attach all of your components. It's inexpensive. You don't have to think about it. Bluetooth doesn't require you to do anything special to make it work. The devices find one another and strike up a conversation without any user input at all.

25 WAP- The base unit This is the base unit of a wireless system used to connect workers with laptops.

26 WAP- The Wave base The ISB Wavebase allows you to connect wireless devices to your fast Internet connection.
