“WHAT IN THE WORLD IS THE SPIRIT DOING? “ Part 2 John16:4-15
2
Review from Last week…
3
HOW DOES THE HOLY SPIRIT ENCOURAGE BELIEVERS WHEN THEY ARE EXPERIENCING THE HATRED AND OPPOSITION OF THE WORLD? The Spirit witnesses to us primarily through the Word of God. The Spirit also witnesses to us through us during times of persecution (John 15:26–27). The Spirit also witnesses through us during times of persecution The Spirit witnesses to us by giving a peace that passes understanding (Philippians 4:6-7)
4
John 16:5–11 (NIV) but now I am going to him who sent me. None of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’ 6 Rather, you are filled with grief because I have said these things. 7 But very truly I tell you, it is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. 8 When he comes, he will prove the world to be in the wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment:
5
John 16:9 about sin, because people do not believe in me; 10 about righteousness, because I am going to the Father, where you can see me no longer; 11 and about judgment, because the prince of this world now stands condemned.
6
THE HOLY SPIRIT AS GOD PROVES CHRIST! (JOHN 16:5–11) Why was it important for them that Jesus returns to the Father. TO EMPOWER TO INTERCEDE TO PROVE
7
John 3:18 (NIV) Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son.
8
THE HOLY SPIRIT AS OUR TEACHER GUIDES THE CHURCH (JOHN 16:12–16)
9
John 16:12–16 (NIV) “I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear. 13 But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come.
10
THE HOLY SPIRIT AS OUR TEACHER GUIDES THE CHURCH (JOHN 16:12–16) John 16:12–16 (NIV) 14 He will glorify me because it is from me that he will receive what he will make known to you. 15 All that belongs to the Father is mine. That is why I said the Spirit will receive from me what he will make known to you.”
11
When you compare John 14:26 (NIV) But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. With John 16:13 (NIV) But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come.
12
We see the wonderful way that God arranged for the writing of the New Testament Scriptures. – The Spirit would remind them of what Jesus had taught them; this gives us the four Gospels. – The Spirit would also “guide” them into all truth; and this would result in the letters of the NT. – “He will show you things to come” refers to the prophetic Scriptures, especially the Book of Revelation.
13
We have a better understanding of the world and the Holy Spirit. We have seen who the Holy Spirit is… as the Comforter who Encourages the Church through persecution (John 15:18–16:4)… as God who Proves Christ! (John 16:5–11) and as our Teacher who Guides the Church (John 16:12–15)…
